Rabiu Kwankwaso, the former governor of Kano State and leader of the Kwankwasiyya Movement, insists that the creation of new emirates in Kano State, carried out by former Governor Abdullahi Ganduje, must be revisited by Governor Abba Yusuf.
Ganduje had divided the Kano Emirate into five, leading to the creation of Gaya, Bichi, Rano, and Karaye Emirates, while also dethroning the 14th Emir of Kano, Sanusi Lamido Sanusi.
Following the triumph of the New Nigerian Peoples Party (NNPP), Kwankwaso stated that the government of Abba Yusuf would review the “dethronement and balkanisation of the Kano Emirate.” Speaking in a live interview on about 10 local radio stations in Kano, Kwankwaso reassured that the issue of Kano Emirates would be revisited by the current administration.
He emphasized that the actions taken were not done in good faith and with good intentions, and they would be scrutinized and potentially rectified. While acknowledging the complexity of the situation, Kwankwaso expressed the need for a thorough discussion on the matter.
In the state, there have been calls for the removal of the Emirs, a change in the status quo, and the reinstatement of the 14th Emir of Kano, Sanusi Lamido Sanusi. During a rally in Kano, Governor Yusuf faced chants and demands from supporters for a “New Governor! New Emir!” and calls for the reinstatement of Sanusi as the Emir of Kano.
Kwankwaso, speaking for over an hour on various political issues, also mentioned that the NNPP is open to discussions with interested parties for potential mergers, emphasizing the party’s openness to dialogue when necessary.
