The Federal Government has issued a stern warning to contractors responsible for the Benin-Ekpoma-Auchi-Okpella-Okene-Lokoja road project. During a recent inspection tour of the project sites in Edo State, Minister of Works, David Umahi, demanded a swift and intensive start to rehabilitation work, threatening contract termination for non-compliance.
“We are concerned about what is happening between Benin-Ekpoma-Auchi-Okpella and the axis of Kogi State,” Minister Umahi said in a statement released by the ministry. “That is what we have been brainstorming on. I have worked with [Governor Godwin Obaseki] throughout last night to direct that the road should be unblocked.”
The Minister’s frustration stemmed from the contractors’ sluggish mobilization and the recent protest by residents along the Benin-Auchi highway.
“I have had a very serious meeting with the Governor here,” Umahi continued. “We are concerned… If you see the grievances of those people you will not blame them so much, because people are dying, trucks are falling.”
Funding Secured, Action Demanded
The statement emphasized that the Federal Government under President Bola Tinubu has already allocated funds for the project. Minister Umahi cautioned contractors that failure to fully mobilize and initiate immediate work would result in contract termination and blacklisting.
Edo State Governor Pledges Support
Governor Godwin Obaseki expressed his appreciation for the Minister’s commitment to improving Nigeria’s road infrastructure. He pledged his administration’s full support for the concrete technology initiative, highlighting its potential for long-lasting roads in the East-West corridor and beyond.
“We are concerned about what is happening…That is what we have been brainstorming on,” Governor Obaseki echoed the Minister’s concerns. He contrasted the current proactive approach with the “lacklustre reactions received in previous years,” particularly before the rainy season.
Focus on Durable Solutions
Governor Obaseki advocated for a shift away from asphalt and towards more sustainable, locally sourced materials like cement and steel.
“The importance of overcoming obstacles to create durable road infrastructure in Nigeria… The Governor argued for the adoption of concrete in road construction to ensure longevity and sustainability,” the statement concluded.
Minister Inspects Progress, Assures Residents
Minister Umahi also inspected various sections of the Lokoja-Benin Road Dualization Project, stressing the need for high standards and timely completion. He then addressed a local protest regarding road conditions, assuring them of the President’s commitment to improvements.
“The President had instructed him to survey the roads in all 36 states and report back,” the statement relayed. Minister Umahi assured residents that the government had settled all financial dues to contractors and promised “significant progress starting from Monday.”
This firm action by the Federal Government signals a renewed focus on tackling the critical Benin-Lokoja road project and improving road infrastructure across the country.
