The Chairman of the Caretaker Committee of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Rivers State, Tony Okocha, has called on Governor Siminalayi Fubara to conduct local government elections in accordance with the constitution.

Okocha made this plea after a visit to the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC) by members of the Inter-Party Advisory Committee (IPAC) on Thursday. He emphasized that the current tenure of Local Government Area (LGA) chairmen is set to expire in a few months, and the APC is prepared to participate in the elections.

Okocha stressed the importance of adhering to the constitutional provision for periodic elections and urged the governor to initiate the election process. He conveyed the APC’s readiness to contest the upcoming LGA election, emphasizing that the party would not boycott the elections, citing a previous mistake that would not be repeated.

Expressing confidence in RSIEC, led by Adolphus Enebeli, a retired Justice of the Rivers State High Court, Okocha highlighted the Supreme Court’s pronouncement that the use of caretaker arrangements in local governments is irregular. The APC aims to ensure a fair and democratic electoral process for the benefit of the people of Rivers State.
