Former Chelsea striker Didier Drogba has expressed optimism about Nigeria’s performance at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), according to Soccernet.ng. Drogba, a football legend from Cote d’Ivoire, acknowledged Nigeria’s potential success but emphasized the importance of his home country’s performance.
The Super Eagles, seeking their fourth AFCON title, have a squad rich in talent and are considered among the most expensive teams in the competition. Despite concerns about their form before the tournament, Nigeria faced initial challenges, earning only one point in their opening match against Equatorial Guinea.
However, they rebounded with a 1-0 victory against Ivory Coast in their second game, showcasing resilience and determination. When asked about his expectations for Nigeria at the AFCON, Drogba expressed optimism, stating, “They (Nigeria) can go far, but we (Cote d’Ivoire) have to finish in front of them. It’s the celebration of football. Of course, I want Ivory Coast to win, but the best team has to win, but if it’s Nigeria, fair to them and well done to them,” as reported by Official54fx.
Nigeria’s final group stage game against Guinea-Bissau on Monday presents an opportunity for the Super Eagles to secure victory and finish at the top of Group A.
