Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), expressed satisfaction with the progress of various ongoing infrastructural projects in Abuja during an inspection tour on Thursday. Wike affirmed his commitment to completing most of the projects before May 29, 2024, and emphasized his determination to deliver high-quality projects to the public. He addressed concerns about reported obstructions, citing instances of a House of Representatives Member hindering construction in Guzape and barriers by the Central Bank of Nigeria on road B6.
Wike strongly rejected such hindrances, emphasizing that these were public projects under the Federal Capital Territory Administration. He directed contractors to proceed with their work, dismissing any attempts to impede their progress. Regarding the absence of Senator Ireti Kingibe in project-related activities, Wike clarified that he doesn’t influence contract awards, which fall under the purview of the Federal Executive Council. He indicated a willingness to collaborate with Kingibe on FCT matters in the National Assembly.
The Minister acknowledged President Tinubu’s support for ongoing projects, highlighting the continuous work across various sites. He expressed optimism about project completion between May and December, with specific mention of the progress at Guzape Lot II and B6 and B12 road in Central Area. Wike praised Gilmor Construction Company and Julious Berger for their efforts, anticipating timely handovers.
In a separate meeting with contractors, Wike expressed dissatisfaction with some handling road resurfacing projects, noting instances of inactivity during unofficial visits to project sites. He urged contractors to demonstrate their commitment by showcasing their work, emphasizing that contracts are awarded only when funds are available. Wike rejected reliance on memos and emphasized the need for a visible physical presence at project sites.
The Minister expressed disappointment with resurfacing contracts awarded in December 2023 and urged contractors not ready to meet their commitments to communicate their status.
